Absolutely anyone can learn how to baby sign and the signs can be learned at home using Bamba’s First Comforts. It’s easy for grandparents and all the family to learn.
Happy New Year to all our bloggers and customers
As you’ll know using gestures with your baby is simple and fun so keep it up through 2010 and let us know your success stories.
Don’t forget to send us photos if you’d like them to be up-loaded to the site.
If you’re new to baby signing then the benefits are:
signing promotes talking skills – signing babies typically speak earlier
it promotes understanding of spoken language – you sign and speak simultaneously. Baby sees and hears what you are communicating.
it promotes play and interaction.
Bamba’s First Comforts are fun and educational. They’re great for busy parents and are designed for quick and easy start up.
Keep signing and let us know how you get on.

Try not to have any background noise (so for example turn off the TV ) when you are playing with Bamba’s First Comforts. Babies love the undivided attention
Let Bamba show your baby a toy from the box. Make the corresponding sign as you say the word. Repeat the sign and the word. Allow your baby to choose a toy and again make the sign and say the word. Be guided by your baby’s interest.
When your baby vocalises (makes a noise when you present a toy) say “that’s right ……..(sentence referring to toy eg “I’m thirsty)” and repeat sign.
When your baby signs , again say “that’s right ………..(sentence referring to toy eg “I’m thirsty)” and repeat the sign. You’re now baby signing.

So Why Use Gestures With Your Baby?
Believe it or not the vast majority of our communication is non-verbal; in other words most of our communication is without speech. Stop for a moment and think how we use our hands to communicate. We do it in lots of ways like pointing, shrugging, waving, beckoning, and hugging. Often it’s not what you say but the way you say it!
In the same way babies communicate with us non verbally long before they can say their first words. Think about when young children put their arms in the air, you recognise immediately that they want to be picked up. This usually happens at about five months. Later, children use pointing to get what they want. This usually happens at about eight or nine months when hand movements become more agile and controlled. Around this time babies also wave to indicate goodbye and shake their heads to indicate no. Of course the exact time can vary as each baby is different but generally babies can use their hands to communicate before they can use spoken words to communicate. Speech involves a complex co-ordination of neurological impulses and fine muscle control of the vocal cords the breathing apparatus the tongue the lips and the palate. So it’s nothing short of a miracle that babies learn to talk. But before they learn to talk babies are communicating all the time.
Happy Signing
